Project Titel: Examining the Development of University-Sponsored Athletics in Hungary - A Situational Analysis

Dr. John Barnes is a professor of Sports Administration who came to the University of New Mexico. Dr. Barnes worked for many years in athletics as an athletic trainer. His experience involved work at the high school, college, and professional levels. This included three years in the California Angels organization and one season with the Montreal Expos double-A team in Harrisburg, PA. He was also the head athletic trainer at Chaffey College for ten years. Additionally, Dr. Barnes worked in the pharmaceutical industry as a territory representative for Wyeth-Ayerst Labs. He received his doctorate in Sports Administration from UNM in 2004. Prior to earning his Ph.D., Dr. Barnes obtained a Master of Science degree in kinesiology from UNLV and a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.

Courses that Dr. Barnes has taught include Financing Sport, Sport Marketing, College Athletic Governance, Consumer Behavior, and Managing the Sport Enterprise. He has written and researched on the subjects of NCAA policy, disability policy in sport, and sport marketing.

With the Fulbright Award, Dr. Barnes is traveling to Hungary during the Spring 2023 semester to complete research and teach classes on leadership in collegiate sports. The Fulbright Program just announced his award to work with the Hungarian University of Physical Education and Sports Science (TE).
